Tracking Certifications

to provide weekend-long, field-based tracking assessments

With roots in the Kalahari Desert of Southern Africa, tracking certifications are both a class and a professional certification—but you don't have to have any prior experience to show up and learn a ton about wildlife out on the landscape.

Expect to spend two full days out in the field, answering questions about track and sign, and discussing your answers. Answering the questions gives you time to practice your tracking process, and learn where your knowledge is solid, and where your growth edges are. And the robust discussion after the answers are submitted is where the real learning takes place—hearing from the expert evaluator, and adding in the opinions of the other participants, allows you to see the tracks in a new way.

Tracking certifications are offered by the expert evaluator team from Tracker Certification North America. WTI hosts certifications because they are unparalleled learning opportunities, and we want to bring them to the broader North American tracking community as often as possible.

A typical certification looks a lot like a tracking class—in both a class and a certification, we'll discuss track and sign as a group, and arrive at our best identification and interpretation together. However, in a certification, participants will have time to look at the track and sign on their own, and record their best answers, before we discuss and interpret as a group. The act of submitting answers before group discussion is called pre-testing, and has a solid body of scientific data behind it that suggests it improves information retention, increases concentration, and the benefits increase in effectiveness more you do it.

This means that certifications are for everyone—no matter your experience level. There's no pressure to achieve a certain score, and we have a lot of practice in creating a supportive, engaging environment, so that the emphasis is on learning and connection rather than performance.

2027 Certifications

In February 2027, WTI is hosting a certification in Southern Arizona, in the Sierra Vista area. We're bringing in evaluator Marcus Reynerson, a fantastic tracker and facilitator, to run the weekend-long program. WTI instructors will assist Marcus with hosting, instructing, and facilitating duties—this is an excellent way to get exposure to multiple teaching styles and find out what helps you grow most as a tracker.
